JONES HOPING FOXTEL CUP WIN KICK STARTS WEST PERTH'S SEASON

Saturday, May 10, 2014 - 4:43 PM

WEST Perth premiership utility Jordan Jones is hopeful that the tremendous experience of winning in the Foxtel Cup in Melbourne on Tuesday night can now kick start the Falcons' WAFL campaign starting this Sunday.

West Perth has won just two of six games in the WAFL so far this season coming off last year's premiership, but the Falcons put in a terrific performance on Tuesday night at Etihad Stadium to record a two-point Foxtel Cup win over unbeaten VFL reigning premiers the Box Hill Hawks.
However, focus has quickly shifted back to trying to get the WAFL season back on track and Jones sees Sunday's game at Arena Joondalup against Peel Thunder as a chance to show that the Falcons will again be a force to be reckoned with in 2014.
"We've been doing a lot of things right, we just haven’t been able to get the results. I guess it is a bit of a drawing the line in the sand moment," Jones said.
"We will have a few guys who didn’t play in Melbourne and watched the game, and they were excited about us winning so they saw the chance for it to become a bit of a turning point in our season.
"It starts again for us against Peel and we'll take it from there. It doesn’t matter who we play, we know every game is going to be a challenge including this week. If we all go out and do our job and play our role, then the result should take care of itself."
As for the Foxtel Cup win in Melbourne on Tuesday night that now sets up the Falcons to play off for a grand final berth against Tasmania's Western Storm at Patersons Stadium on Tuesday June 24, Jones enjoyed the experience but also how the West Perth youngsters stepped up to the occasion.
"It was a great experience for the team and the boys were pretty happy to get to play on Etihad with the roof closed. It was a very good experience for the footy club," he said.
"I reckon the boys will take a lot out of it. The experience itself was great and you saw a lot of the guys taking photos, and putting them up on Facebook and Instagram, and they were just really excited.
"They weren’t overawed by the occasion either, which is a good thing. They just loved the experience and hopefully we can take some momentum from that into our WAFL season now."
There was little time to enjoy too much about Melbourne for the West Perth squad having flown in Monday night and flying home early Wednesday morning, but they did tour Carlton's facilities and certainly made sure they enjoyed the club's first ever win in Melbourne.
Jones, along with a couple of other Victorians in the team, did take the chance to get home for the weekend as well.
"It was a pretty tight schedule for the boys, but I was lucky enough to go over a bit earlier to visit some family and friends," Jones said.
"But the rest of the boys got in on Monday night, we had a tour of Carlton's facilities on Tuesday, we played Tuesday night and then flew out early the next morning.
"It was a pretty tough schedule, but obviously our season is a little bit more important so we tried to get in and get out. We were lucky enough to get a win along the way."WEST Perth premiership utility Jordan Jones is hopeful that the tremendous experience of winning in the Foxtel Cup in Melbourne on Tuesday night can now kick start the Falcons' WAFL campaign starting this Sunday.
