WAFLW Round 11 Wrap

Tuesday, May 23, 2023 - 10:16 AM
Given our Falcons League squad had a good 37-point victory against Peel at home in Round 4, they were in good spirits heading down the freeway to Mandurah, the team was also bolstered by the return of creative forward Tia Bergin and Ruck Cameron Dawson.
The West Perth midfield outworked Peel and help deliver more inside 50’s and were able to control the game when it mattered most in the last quarter after the game was even for the first three quarters to run over the top of Peel and win by 11-points and stay within a game and a half of the top 4, final score 6.2 (38) to 4.3 (27).
It was a very clean start with Cameron winning first tap for Kayla van den Heever to clear to Tia Bergin forward of centre, her kick found Bianca Webb, who went on to Emily Bennett, the set shot sailed through, and West Perth were on the board in under a minute, that set the tone for high expectations. The good start was further validated when Emily Bennett then intercepted across midfield shot out to Taylor Ferguson, she kicked on to Grace Betti who in her typical style snaped truly for the Falcons second goal.
Peel who were struggling to work it through West Perth’s defence set up by Liliana Grassenis, Jessica Roper and Matilda Bain tried a long kick over the top where Peel were able to kick a dribbling goal to halve the deficit.
Kayla van den Heever and Bianca Webb continued to combine well out of centre. Elissa Price was prominent on the ball and seen rebounding several times across half forward and her pressure acts were creating opportunities.
The Falcons were just a little wasteful going inside 50 given the field dominance they had.
The start of the second saw Peel have several repeat entries, but Karla Stagg, Ebony Jackson and Bianca Webb again were able to stop the constant forward drives, until Peel did eventually break-through for a goal to even up the scores.
Cameron Dawson inclusion was a decisive one as she was winning in the ruck and working well at ground level. Peel were getting good numbers to the ball and with long kicks were keeping ball in forward half. A stoppage in the pocket and a turnover resulted in Peel snapping another goal and gave them the lead by that margin.
A stoppage on centre wing, which Emily Bennett won the take-away to deliver to Megan Norbury kicking forward to Erin O’Brien who centred to Elissa Price who goals, confirming her strong first half of footya dn bringing the scores back to level going into the main break.
Arm wrestle of a restart after the break, until a stoppage in West Perth 50 led to a turnover and a kick forward where Liliana Grassenis, now at Full Forward marked and goaled.
Jeevna started to get several possessions out on the wing and with her trademark precise kicking able to prevent Peel from getting inside their forward 50.
With Liliana up forward, Matilda Bain was holding her own deep in defence marking and running off, and with a couple of late saves stop a couple of certain Peel goals. Peel were able to equalise eventually.
With scores all square as the last quarter started, West Perth seemed to step up a gear in both run and contested possessions, Brooke Hongell who has marshalled the troops with great effect all season, was again working very well across half back. One of the plays of the day was when Karla Stagg took a great mark across half back and rebounded quickly to Emily Bennett in the middle of the ground, she drove the ball deep inside 50where Tia Bergin at full pace split through the pack and collected the loose ball and kicked a goal.
West Perth maintained an all-out attack and were able to retain the ball forward of centre for most of the quarter and when Grace Betti kicked her second of the day the Falcons were home and a great contest that they were able to sustain for longer than Peel and earn a just reward of four valuable premiership points.
