West Perth Football Club has been granted a license to compete in the 2022 Optus WAFL Women’s competition commencing in mid-February.

The addition of West Perth will see the WAFLW expand to seven teams, endorsing another significant milestone for the competition heading into its fourth season of existence.

West Perth join South Fremantle, Claremont, East Fremantle, Peel, Subiaco, and Swan Districts contending in the Premier Women’s competition.

WAFC Executive Manager WAFL & Talent Scott Baker said it was exciting to see another club added into the competition, supporting the continued growth of female football and talent development outcomes.

“Female participation continues to be the number one growth area in football within Western Australia,” Baker said.

“It’s really important that we continue strengthening the talent pathway for those players who want to pursue the opportunity to play at WAFLW or AFLW level.”

“The West Perth women’s program has been outstanding over several years and has developed talent that is ready for the WAFLW League competition.”

“The standard of the competition is growing, and the addition of West Perth will allow more females to continue their journey on the female pathway. “

West Perth Football Club CEO Joe McCarthy said the club was thrilled to obtain a WAFLW license, giving reward to a women’s program that has had a sustained period of success.

“This is a really exciting period for the West Perth Football Club,” McCarthy said.

“The time and dedication that has been put into our women’s program from a number of people has been enormous and this is great reward for our players and staff.”

“We can’t wait to begin our journey in the WAFL Women’s competition.”

Despite the delay to the AFL Women’s competition, the Optus WAFLW competition will begin in mid-February.
