West Perth and Perth both came into Saturday's match up at Joondalup Arena in good form with the Falcons having won three of their past four matches, and the Demons their previous two setting the stage for a fascinating contest.

EVERY game that Bill Monaghan coaches at West Perth, he extends his tenure as the club's longest-serving coach and every win he oversees grows his legacy as coaching the Falcons to the most wins, but his focus and passion remains as strong as ever.

On the back of his 204-game playing career at both Subiaco and Peel Thunder, Monaghan moved into a successful coaching stint with the Lions under Peter German as his assistant and then premiership-winning reserves coach.

Monaghan then had to undergo some disappointments by being overlooked for senior coaching positions and by the time he put his hand up to coach West Perth in 2009 after Todd Curley stood down upon accepting a role with Fremantle, he didn’t expect much.

ANDREW Strijk has now kicked 13 goals in his past two WAFL games inspiring West Perth to another thrilling win over Claremont on Saturday but it took a fingertip effort from fellow veteran Chris Keunen to deny the Tigers the winning goal at Claremont Oval.
The recent history between the two clubs was remarkable already entering Saturday's clash at Claremont Oval and it certainly continued.
West Perth had won six of the previous seven meetings with Claremont but four of those had only been by a combined 13 points and ever since the Tigers beat the Falcons by 119 points in Round 18, 2012, every game between the two teams had been decided by 10.6 points. Read More [+]

WEST Perth heads to Claremont Oval for the first time in 2018 looking to continue its good recent run against Claremont and to further close in on second position on the WAFL ladder.

The Tigers and Falcons have built quite the strong rivalry in recent years where tempers have often boiled over and tight finishes have become the expected, and there's little reason not to expect something similar this Saturday at Claremont Oval.

There's plenty at stake for both clubs too with Claremont trying to break into the top five and West Perth attempting to further consolidate their position and close in further on South Fremantle's second spot.

A CAREER-best five goals form former skipper Jay van Berlo and kicking the game's last four goals wasn’t quite enough for West Perth against Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday.
Coming off winning the past two WAFL premierships, Peel had struggled to date in the 2018 season but now coming off a hard fought win against Claremont last week, they backed it up with another tight win against West Perth in Mandurah on Saturday.
The game went the way of the strong breeze with Peel kicking four goals to one to lead by 21 points at quarter-time before West Perth hit back with four goals to one in the second to trail by just two points at the main break. Read More [+]

HE is already West Perth's longest-ever serving coach and now Bill Monaghan reaches another significant milestone in Monday's WA Day Derby becoming the first Falcons boss to ever get to 200 matches.

It's remarkable to now consider that Monaghan did a long coaching apprenticeship and there was a time when he thought he might not even get a chance to be a WAFL senior coach going back a little over a decade.

Following 204-game playing career at both Subiaco and Peel Thunder, Monaghan stepped into a coaching role back with the Lions leading the reserves to great success and being part of the league triumphs too under Peter German.
