West Perth was in a winning position at three quarter time against league leaders Subiaco but unfortunately didn't score a major in the final term to go down by eighteen points. In the last two encounters the Falcons have been goalless in five out of the eight quarters; this trend was to be costly once again as the Lions controlled the final term to run out victors.
The big question was if the Falcons could take advantage of the wind when it was their turn. Things were looking good when Kepler Bradley marked and kicked accurately within two minutes. Another behind to Brent Lecras followed but when Chris Hall kicked a major for the Lions at the twelve minute mark the lead was back out to the quarter time difference. At the fifteen minute mark a Brent Lecras goal was the start of a Falcon fight back. Adam Radici, Callum Chambers and Craig Smoker combined to get the ball forward to Mark Seaby who kicked a major from thirty metres. A strong attack on the football by Adam Campbell three minutes later saw Andrew Strijk bounce one through from sixty metres. It was a clever kick into a deserted forward line. The margin was now only one straight kick but dual Sandover Medallist, Allistair Pickett, stepped up to kick a goal and a behind to enable Subiaco to take a thirteen point lead into half time. Scores were 6.4 (40) to 4.3 (27).
The Falcons played a terrific third quarter into the wind, kicking six goals. The first was Andrew Strijk's second after he laid a great tackle to score from forty metres. A minute later a spearing Mark Seaby pass resulted in "Kiwis" first for the game. When Mark Seaby, Jeff Gobbels and Matt Gaudagnin combined to assist Adam Campbell with his second West Perth hit the lead for the first time in the match. The four point lead was extended to ten when Troy Longmuir and Callum Chambers combined for Callum to kick his first. Subi steadied to kick the next two and regain the lead at the seventeen minute mark but West Perth regained the lead a minute later when Ray Bartholomew took advantage of a free kick at centre half forward, played on and kicked accurately. Mark Seaby's second at the twenty two minute mark saw the Falcons lead by eight. A Subi behind followed but at three quarter time West Perth turned for home with a seven point lead and the advantage of the wind. Brad Smith kicked his first for the game at the seventeen minute mark. Up to this stage Dan Hunt had much the better of the contest. Mark Seaby controlled the ruck for the term giving the West Perth running brigade first use of the footy. Dion Fleay also took a number of defensive marks. The Falcons led 10.4 (64) to 8.8 (57).
Subi didn't allow West Perth to get into the final term. Like the first quarter they dominated to kick four goals to nil. The Falcons only kicked two behinds for the quarter and lost by eighteen points 12.12 (84) to 10.6 (66). It was a disappointing end to a quarter that promised so much.
West Perth certainly showed that they can match it with the league leaders and the result will give the side confidence if they meet during the finals. Dan Hunt was adjudged best on ground outpointing Brad Smith who kicked only two goals after being well looked after by the umpires. Mark Seaby was next best after controlling the ruck. Dustin Burns was the highest possession getter and gave plenty of run off half back. Dion Fleay and Brent Lecras also received awards for their defensive efforts. South Fremantle and Perth losing today has helped the Falcons cause but the next three games loom as vital. East Fremantle at Shark Park next week will be a real challenge. Congratulations to the Reserves whose sixth win has taken them to the brink of the four.
