Falcons into top 4 Print E-mail

hill_web.jpgWest Perth won themselves a place in the four with their fifteen point victory over Peel Thunder at the Arena on Saturday. This victory, along with other favourable results, sees the Falcons a game plus percentage clear of nearest rival Perth. It was a game that West Perth controlled for most of the day against an opponent only half a win behind them on the premiership table. The fifteen point margin should have been greater as it was made up of ten extra scoring shots.

The Falcons kicked to the southern end for the first term and were on the board after three minutes when Troy Longmuir marked and kicked accurately. Brent Lecras and Kepler Bradley were involved in the build up. This trio of players were to have a big influence all day. A behind to "Longy" followed before Kepler Bradley kicked a major from the square after a strong mark. The lead was out to fourteen after ten minutes thanks to a Jeff Gobbels behind. Peel's first score, a goal, came at the fifteen minute mark. This reduced the lead to eight. Successive behinds to Troy Longmuir followed before Clayton Lasscock intercepted a Peel kick in to pass to Tom Crossland who took the lead out to sixteen. Troy Longmuir, who was in everything, kicked his fourth behind at the twenty minute mark but the seventeen point lead was reduced to eleven with a goal to Peel towards the end of the quarter. West Perth had dominated the term but led by only eleven, 3.6 (24) to 2.1 (13).

jnr_web.jpgWest Perth continued their dominance in the second term and had extended their lead to twenty one after ten minutes. West Perth kicked four behinds in this time with the only major going to Brent Lecras. The Peel coaching staff sensed that the game was slipping out of control as they flooded the West Perth forward line. At different times during this term there weren't any players in the Peel forward line. Brent Lecras kicked his second at the fifteen minute mark after a long run and accurate kick, two minutes later Troy Longmuir scored his second after some assistance from Josh Pearce. There was a bit of luck in this goal as a Peel backman's kick bounced off the back of a team mate into Josh Pearce's arms. Chris Keunen then took a strong mark and received fifty metres to take the lead out to thirty eight. A behind to Josh Pearce followed and when Caleb Shadbolt kicked his first after another fifty metre penalty the lead was forty five. Peel finished the quarter with a goal and a behind to trail by thirty eight at half time. The scores were 8.11 (59) to 3.3 (21). West Perth dominated the term and should have led by more.

Peel produced a much improved third term to get themselves right back into the game. Their key forwards, Ballantyne and Buszan, both of whom had been well held started to have an influence on the game. These two players shared the first three goals of the quarter to reduce the margin to twenty after six minutes. Troy Longmuir kicked his third to provide a steadier for the Falcons but Peel continued to reduce the margin. A Jeff Gobbels goal took the lead out to twenty five at the fifteen minute mark but Peel controlled the rest of the term to narrow the margin to just eleven at the final change. Peel could sense that a victory would put them in the four at the Falcons expense and they played accordingly. Scores were 10.13 (73) to 9.8 (62).

With the game up for grabs West Perth responded. Goals to Kepler Bradley (his second), Luke Tedesco and Brent Lecras'sairbourne_web.jpg third saw the lead out to thirty two after sixteen minutes and the Falcons seemed to have the game under control. But once again Peel responded to kick four unanswered goals and at the twenty six minute mark the West Perth lead was only nine points. The game was up for grabs until the thirty minute mark when a strong attack on the footy by Troy Longmuir saw him gain possession, handball to Brayden Duckworth who kicked accurately to seal the victory. Final scores were 14.18 (102) to 13.9 (87).

The Falcons had a number of good players with Kepler Bradley being judged best with his hard running performance. Jeff Gobbels had twenty eight possessions and was next best, he also ran hard all day. Troy Longmuir was a real focus point in the forward line. Josh Pearce had another day out with a match high thirty seven possessions while Brent Lecras rounded out the award winners with his three goals and twenty two touches. Mark Seaby continues to give his all every time he plays for the Falcons and often gave West Perth first use of the footy. A bye next week and five games to finish, all of which are against teams around West Perth on the Premiership table. The fate of the 2008 season is fairly and squarely in the hands of the team.
