The thirty six point victory over Claremont on Saturday took West Perth into second spot on the ladder with one round to play. A win against the inform East Fremantle next week will ensure that West Perth gets the double chance. The Falcons always looked in control against the Tigers but a spirited fight back from the fifteen minute mark of the third term gave supporters some anxious moments.
Claremont won the toss and kicked to the northern end. Conditions were perfect for football. Brayden Duckworth got the Falcons on the board with a behind but it was Claremont who kicked the first major. It went to Ian Richardson and was the first of his four for the game. Another behind to the Tigers followed but scores were tied up when Tom Crossland snapped a major after great forward line persistence. Successive goals to Brayden Duckworth followed. His kicking was to be a feature of his six goal haul. The run of the Falcons started to dominate the game, a Callum Chambers behind was followed by a strong mark and accurate kick from forty metres by Jai Menegola. He, like a number of other youngsters introduced to league football this year, gives the Club much to look forward to in the future. West Perth finished the term with two behinds to take a twenty one point lead into the first change. Scores were 4.4 (28) to 1.1 (7).
Five behinds, shared by both sides, in the first seven minutes were punctuated by Troy Longmuir's first for the day. The lead was out to thirty four at the eight minute mark when the hard running Josh Pearce assisted Tom Crossland for his second. It is great to see young "Crossy" going so well in the league side. The lead was extended by another goal when Jason Salecic and Troy Longmuir were in the build up to Brayden Duckworth's third. Once again behinds were the order of the day before Ian Richardson's and Claremont's second at the eighteen minute mark reduced the lead to thirty five. Troy Longmuir was again involved when the reliable Brayden Duckworth kicked his fourth to establish a forty one point half time lead. It was an impressive half of footy by the Falcons and they led 8.10 (58) to 2.5 (17).
By the six minute mark a goal to Troy Longmuir and Brent Lecras along with two behinds saw the Falcons establish a fifty five point lead. Seven behinds were shared by the teams until the fifteen minute mark at which point West Perth had established a fifty six point margin. But it was at this point that Claremont key forwards Anthony Jones and Chad Jones, who had been very well held, started to have an influence on the game. They, in association with Ian Richardson, combined to kick five straight goals to reduce the margin to just twenty six at the final change. Scores were 10.16 (76) to 7.8 (50).
When Troy Longmuir kicked his third within a minute of the final term commencing it seemed that the Tigers challenge had been repelled. This was not to be as by the fourteen minute mark the lead had been reduced to fourteen points. It was at this point that the great value of Craig Smoker to the Falcons was put on show. He kicked a long goal on the run from outside fifty to steady West Perth; this was followed by a precise pass that hit Troy Longmuir on the chest. The lead was out to twenty one following the narrow miss by "Longy" but it was enough to stem the tide. Tom Crossland roved the ball from a throw in to kick his third and Brayden Duckworth kicked two more to take his tally to six. His final goal, on the boundary from fifty metres, was probably the pick of them. Claremont finished the match with three behinds to give West Perth the15.18 (108) to 10.12 (72) victory.
It was a steady team performance by a side playing good football in the run to the finals. Brayden Duckworth was judged best with his six, his kicking was a delight to watch. Youngster Alex James was rewarded for his hard run and twenty two possessions as was Ray Bartholomew who had twenty four touches. Josh Pearce, who has become a prolific ball winner, was next best and the final award went to Brent Lecras who has shown the ability to play both ends of the ground with distinction. The game against East Fremantle at The Arena next week should be a ripper so be there to help the boys secure second spot.
