West Perth continued their good form in the run to the finals and gave themselves a chance at second spot with their twenty two point victory over East Perth at Medibank Stadium on Saturday. It was a close fought game all day but the Falcons always seemed to have the edge over their arch rivals and in the end they ran out comfortable winners.
Returning captain, Jason Salecic, won the toss and kicked to the Perth end. The Falcons were first out of the blocks with majors to Brent Lecras and Troy Longmuir in the first four minutes. The Royals steadied and ten minutes later had claimed the lead by one point. Tom Crossland then kicked a classy goal when he had a number of bounces and kicked accurately from outside fifty. He had a big impact early in the game. A behind and then the first of Jason Salecic's four for the day took the lead out to twelve. West Perth continued to build momentum when the classy Callum Chambers kicked his first of four after a clever pick up on the run. The lead was out to four goals straight when Callum kicked his second after involvement by Tom Crossland and Brent Lecras. A point to the skipper followed before East Perth narrowed the margin at quarter time with a goal and a behind. In a bright start to the game West Perth led 6.3 (39) to 3.3 (21).
The second term was an even affair with the Royals narrowing the margin to eleven after six minutes. Dan Hunt passed to Ryan Clark for his first three minutes later but a quick reply by East Perth had the Falcons again leading by eleven. A clever tap by Brayden Duckworth enabled "Sala" to rove the ball and run into the square for his second. Two behinds followed before Craig Smoker intercepted the kick in to finish from forty metres. It is great to see him running back into form as he shares the ball very efficiently. At the nineteen minute mark an East Perth major reduced the lead to nineteen but a Falcon reply was almost instantaneous. A hand ball out of the middle from Brent Lecras saw Stephen Hill kick his first goal for the Club. A behind to East Perth and the first to Andrew Merrington after a mark in the square reduced the margin to eighteen. West Perth finished the term with three behinds to lead by twenty one at the half. Scores were 10.8 (68) to 7.5 (47). The run from the backline by Dustin Burns, Dion Fleay and Dan Hunt was a feature of the first half.
The sides traded behinds in the third term until a goal from the dangerous Tim Noakes reduced the margin to sixteen. Once again each side kicked behinds before Andrew Merrington's second took the lead to ten. The East Perth revival continued with another major at the twenty minute mark, the lead now was only four. A behind to Troy Longmuir and Callum Chambers third increased the lead. This was West Perth's first major for the term. To East Perth's credit they replied immediately but a second to Tom Crossland and Brent Lecras saw the lead extended by one point from half time, it was twenty two points. Matt Gaudagnin showed brilliant ball control in his assist to Brent Lecras. Scores were 13.12 (90) to 10.8 (68).
East Perth were out of the blocks in the final term reducing the margin to just nine by the eight minute mark. Callum Chambers steadied the ship for the Falcons with his fourth a minute later when he was on the end of a Jason Salecic handball. Another goal followed shortly after when Troy Longmuir kicked accurately from deep in the pocket. Two behinds to East Perth followed before West Perth kicked consecutive goals through Jason Salecic to take the lead out to thirty one and finally put the game to rest. The Falcons continued to pepper the goals with three behinds before East Perth finished the game with two majors to give the final margin of twenty two points. West Perth had recorded a 18.15 (123) to 15.11 (101) victory.
Dustin Burns was judged best after a hard running display from the backline. He repelled many attacks and set up a lot of forward line moves. Callum Chambers was next best after another typical hard running display and four valuable goals. Dion Fleay was in superb touch in defence and made it tough for the East Perth forwards. He took a number of telling marks. Jason Salecic received an award for his hard run and four goals. He made a welcome return. The final award went to the highest possession getter, Josh Pearce, who sent the ball forward on a number of occasions. Although he didn't receive an award Dan Hunt was a key part of the West Perth defensive effort. Victory against Claremont next week will see West Perth in second spot after South Fremantle's defeat by East Fremantle. Be there to support the team as they gear up for finals action.
