Falcons City/Country Carnival a big hit Print E-mail
Friday, 18 July 2008
by Costas Kastanis

country-squad_web.jpgYoung footballers from West Perth's country and metropolitan zones got the chance to show off their skills in the City/Country Carnival held at Arena Joondalup last Sunday.

Two teams chosen from the metropolitan zone took on the Falcon's Country Development Squad in a three-way round robin competition.

West Perth District Manager Gerry O'Dea said the best part of the day was watching the kids enjoy themselves playing with and against players they don't normally play with.

He said the fact that scores were not kept during the games challenged the kids to play good team football.

"We don't want to see individual brilliance," he said. "We want the boys to get to know the other guys in that team environment and mix with them. We want them to appreciate that different players from different teams have got different skills."

citycountrycarn1_web.jpgCountry Coach Craig Gmeiner last week won the WA Football Commission's Ken Armstrong Community Coach of the Year award. He said the carnival was a great opportunity for his players to use the Falcon's facilities and to play against the Perth based boys.

Gmeiner was pleased his players were starting to play the kind of football the club wanted.

"They are really beginning to gel as a group which is important because they don't often get the chance to come together as a group," he said.

Country Captain Jason Musca plays his football in Merredin. He said he had enjoyed meeting new people and getting the chance to play with them as a team.

"It's a real good experience to come and see what they do down here at the Falcons," he said.

District Manager Gerry O'Dea summed up the City/Country Carnival as a "resounding" success.

"There was some great football played on the day and all in the right spirit," he said. "We got a great deal of positive feedback that the content of the day was well received." citycountry2_web.jpg

Mr O'Dea said the players thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the spectators saw competitive, high quality games of footy.

"It goes to show that West Perth Football Club is right to promote this terrific City/Country concept," he said. "We are the only WAFL club to do it, and it has grown in popularity and is now an integral part of our district calendar."
