West Perth Football Club is looking forward to hosting a "unique" City/Country Carnival on July 13.

Two district teams of 14-15 year olds will be chosen from West Perth's Metropolitan zone to play against the club's Country Development Squad in a three-way round robin competition.

The carnival will give local players the chance to represent their district and reward their form and conduct, and give country players a development opportunity against the city base. West Perth District Manager Gerry O'Dea said players were picked on citizenship at the club and football ability.

But Mr O'Dea said being a good player was not the most important selection criteria.

"You've got to be able to play the game," he said. "But we really want to get the kids who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in terms of being good sportsmen and good citizens at their club.

"We don't want to run a system where if you're not good enough to play, see you later.

"We want to be a little more community minded than that."

Mr O'Dea said West Perth was proud to be the only WAFL club to run a program like the City/Country Carnival.

He said the carnival was a celebration of all the things that were good about youth football such as friendship and fitness.

"We just want the players to enjoy themselves and play fantastic footy," he said.

But Mr O'Dea had a warning for parents who get too emotionally involved in their children's sport.

"If you want to come here and throw your arms around, abuse umpires, march up and down the sideline and scream and yell, don't come," he said. "There's no place for that kind of behavior with what we are trying to achieve here."

Mr O'Dea said the kids who played in last years carnival "loved" it and he was confident 2008 would be even more successful.
