In the 1960s they were fiercely competitive on-field opponents. But these days they are the best of mates and when Perth and West Perth are opposed, they enjoy catching up.

Pat Astone and Bill Dempsey were key ruckmen in their teams' premierships - Pat in Perth's hat trick of flags (1966-67-68) and Bill with West Perth in 1969 and 1971.

Between them they played 558 league games, Pat 215 with the Demons and Bill 343 with the Falcons, then known as the Cardinals. And there were few honors that didn't come their way, including state representation, club captain (Pat) and fairest and best (Bill). In addition, Bill has the honor of having the grandstand at HBF Arena bearing his name, along with that of another West Perth champion, Mel Whinnen.

And when West Perth play at Lathlain Park, Bill says he is often flattered to be mistaken for Pat by Perth supporters. 'I never correct them,' he says."
